Why wood, and why it's a better hook than it sounds

The tradition of marking each anniversary with a material goes back to Germany in the 1700s and landed in Britain in the 1800s. The list works on a simple idea: the further you get, the more durable the material. Paper for the first year. Cotton for the second. By year five you're on to wood.

The reasoning is that after five years a marriage has taken root. Wood is strong, it's got character, and it only gets more interesting with age. It's a nicer bit of symbolism than most of the list, and it gives you something rare in gift buying: a reason. Not just "here's a present" but "here's a present that means something specific about where we are."

Worth knowing, because it comes up a lot: the modern UK list swaps wood for silverware, and the fifth anniversary gemstone is sapphire. You don't have to pick one. Plenty of people go traditional because the meaning is better, and honestly, wood is far easier to make personal.

Where most 5th anniversary gifts go wrong

We've been making these for years and we see the same three mistakes.

1. It's wooden, but it lives in a drawer

Engraved plaques, carved keepsakes, framed prints. They're lovely for about a fortnight, then they get put somewhere safe and never come out again. The test is simple: will he pick this up tomorrow morning? If the honest answer is no, keep looking.

2. It leans too hard on the joke

There are a lot of "wood you believe it's been 5 years" gifts out there. They're funny, and they're a great add-on. As the main event they can feel a bit thin, especially if he's put thought into yours.

3. It's another version of something he already owns

Aftershave, a wallet, a whisky set. Nothing wrong with any of them, but he's had them before and he'll have them again. Five years deserves better than the default.

What works instead

Something he wears. It gets used daily, it's visible, and it's a legitimate way in for wood without feeling like a novelty. • He's into watches properly. Go mechanical. No battery, you can see the movement working.

Short beats clever. You've got limited space and the ones that land hardest are usually the plainest. Specific beats grand. A private reference will always mean more than a quote off the internet. Dates work. They're the easiest way to anchor it to the day without having to be a poet.

"Is a wooden watch actually any good, or is it a novelty?"

Fair question, and there is some tat out there. Ours are real wood, not veneer over plastic, and they run on proper quartz or mechanical movements. They're light, which surprises people, and the grain is different on every single one because it's a natural material. "What if he doesn't like it?"

Then send it back. We take returns on everything within 30 days, engraving included. Most places won't do that on a personalised item, and we know it's the thing that stops people ordering, so we took it off the table.

"He's fussy about watches."

Most fussy men own several watches and none of them are wooden. That's the opening. Go minimalist rather than loud, and let the engraving do the emotional work.

"I don't know his wrist size."

Not a problem. Every watch comes with an adjustment tool and instructions, and you can size it in a couple of minutes at home. If you need extra links, they're a few pounds.
