Why wood, and why it's a better hook than it sounds

The tradition of marking each anniversary with a material goes back to Germany in the 1700s and landed in Britain in the 1800s. The list works on a simple idea: the further you get, the more durable the material. Paper for the first year. Cotton for the second. By year five you're on to wood.

The reasoning is that after five years a marriage has taken root. Wood is strong, it's got character, and it only gets more interesting with age. It's a nicer bit of symbolism than most of the list, and it gives you something rare in gift buying: a reason. Not just "here's a present" but "here's a present that means something specific about where we are."

Worth knowing, because it comes up a lot: the modern UK list swaps wood for silverware, and the fifth anniversary gemstone is sapphire. You don't have to pick one. Plenty of people go traditional because the meaning is better, and honestly, wood is far easier to make personal.

The short version. Wood means strength, growth and something that lasts. If you can find a wooden gift he'll actually use every day, you've done the job.

Where most 5th anniversary gifts go wrong

We've been making these for years and we see the same three mistakes.

1. It's wooden, but it lives in a drawer

Engraved plaques, carved keepsakes, framed prints. They're lovely for about a fortnight, then they get put somewhere safe and never come out again. The test is simple: will he pick this up tomorrow morning? If the honest answer is no, keep looking.

2. It leans too hard on the joke

There are a lot of "wood you believe it's been 5 years" gifts out there. They're funny, and they're a great add-on. As the main event they can feel a bit thin, especially if he's put thought into yours.

3. It's another version of something he already owns

Aftershave, a wallet, a whisky set. Nothing wrong with any of them, but he's had them before and he'll have them again. Five years deserves better than the default.

What works instead

Something he wears. It gets used daily, it's visible, and it's a legitimate way in for wood without feeling like a novelty. A wooden watch does the job neatly, which is the honest reason we sell a lot of them around the fifth year. He can wear it every day, or keep it for the occasions that matter, a date night, a dinner out, the anniversary itself. When there's an engraving on the back, it stops being a nice watch and becomes a thing only he has.

And there's something in it for you as well. You get to see his face when he first reads the back, and after that, every time he puts it on, he'll think of you for a second. Not many gifts keep doing that.

Quick way to narrow it down:

  • He keeps things simple. Go minimalist. Plain dial, no clutter, wears with anything.
  • He likes a bit of detail. Go chronograph. More going on, sits well with a shirt or a coat.
  • He's into watches properly. Go mechanical. No battery, you can see the movement working.

If you're not sure he'll take to a full wooden watch, we also do a few that mix brushed stainless steel with real wood built in, so they read as a modern metal watch with a bit of warmth to them. The Gothenburg and the Oslo are both worth a look.

If you want something to open alongside it, the anniversary and couples gifts are worth a look. And every watch order comes with a free gift, chosen at checkout from a range of small wooden extras, so you can pick one that suits the occasion.

What to have engraved (the bit people get stuck on)

This is where most people freeze. The engraving is free and it's the part he'll notice, so it's worth ten minutes of thought. A few things we've learned from engraving thousands of these.

Short beats clever. You've got limited space and the ones that land hardest are usually the plainest. Specific beats grand. A private reference will always mean more than a quote off the internet. Dates work. They're the easiest way to anchor it to the day without having to be a poet.

Ideas you can steal

  • 5 years. 12.06.21. Still you.Date plus a small line. Hard to beat.
  • Every hour with you.Works because it's a watch. Not too pleased with itself.
  • Five down. Keep going. For couples who don't do sentimental.
  • Wood. Year five. Yours always, S.Leans into the tradition without explaining it.
  • Best five of my life so far.The "so far" is doing a lot of work here.
  • 12.06.2021 → foreverBarely any words. Says everything.
  • Still my favourite decision.Good if you want warm rather than romantic.

Stuck? Answer one of these and you've usually got your engraving: what does he say to you most often, what's the daft nickname nobody else uses, or what were you doing five years ago today. There are more in our engraving ideas guide.

You'll see a picture of the exact engraving in your confirmation email before we make it. If it's not right, tell us and we'll fix it.

The things you're probably wondering

"Is a wooden watch actually any good, or is it a novelty?"

Fair question, and there is some tat out there. Ours are real wood, not veneer over plastic, and they run on proper quartz or mechanical movements. They're light, which surprises people, and the grain is different on every single one because it's a natural material. We've got over 1,200 reviews if you'd rather hear it from someone other than us.

"What if he doesn't like it?"

Then send it back. We take returns on everything within 30 days, engraving included. Most places won't do that on a personalised item, and we know it's the thing that stops people ordering, so we took it off the table.

"He's fussy about watches."

Most fussy men own several watches and none of them are wooden. That's the opening. Go minimalist rather than loud, and let the engraving do the emotional work.

"I don't know his wrist size."

Not a problem. Every watch comes with an adjustment tool and instructions, and you can size it in a couple of minutes at home. If you need extra links, they're a few pounds.

"When do I need to order by?"

Everything is made to order, so allow 2 to 3 working days for us to make it, plus delivery on top. If you're reading this weeks out, you're in good shape. If you're closer than that, there's priority shipping and you're welcome to message us and we'll tell you honestly whether it'll land in time.

One more thing

Every order plants a tree. You get to see where in the world it's going and who it supports. It's a small thing, but it feels right on a wood anniversary. More on that here.

5th anniversary questions, answered

Why is wood the 5th wedding anniversary gift?

The traditional anniversary list assigns a material to each year, getting more durable as the years go on. Wood is the material for year five because it symbolises strength, growth and something that has taken root. The tradition dates back to 1700s Germany and became popular in Britain during the Victorian era.

What is the modern 5th anniversary gift?

On the modern UK list, the fifth anniversary is silverware. The gemstone is sapphire and the flower is the daisy. Most people still go with wood, because the meaning behind it is stronger and it's much easier to make personal.

What is a good 5th anniversary gift for him?

Something wooden he will actually use, rather than something he puts away. A personalised wooden watch is the most popular choice because he wears it every day, it fits the wood tradition, and an engraving on the back makes it his and nobody else's.

What should I get engraved on a 5th anniversary watch?

Keep it short and specific. Your wedding date, the number of years, a private nickname or a single line you both say to each other will always beat a long quote. Examples that work well: "5 years. 12.06.21. Still you." or "Every hour with you."

Is the engraving free?

Yes. Engraving is included on every watch at no extra cost, whether that's a name, initials, a date or a short message. You'll see an image of the engraving in your confirmation email before we make it.

Can I return a personalised watch if it isn't right?

Yes. We accept returns on all products within 30 days of delivery, including engraved ones, as long as they're in resellable condition. Full details are on our returns page.

How long does a personalised wooden watch take to arrive?

Every watch is handmade to order in the UK. Current processing time is 2 to 3 working days, then Royal Mail Tracked delivery on top. Priority shipping cuts the making time to 1 working day if you're short of time.

Are wooden watches good quality?

The good ones are. Ours are made from real wood rather than a veneer, use quartz or mechanical movements, and come in a bamboo gift box with an adjustment tool and instructions. Because wood is natural, the grain on every watch is slightly different, so no two are identical.

We're a small family business and we make every watch ourselves, here in the UK. If you're weighing something up and you'd rather just ask a person, email us at sales@thewoodlook.com and one of us will reply. Genuinely, we'd rather help you get it right than sell you the wrong thing.
