Quick answer: Quartz watches run on a battery, keep very accurate time and need no fuss, apart from a new battery every so often. Automatic mechanical watches need no battery: they're powered by the movement of your wrist, and many have a see-through back so you can watch the movement working. Quartz is the easy everyday choice; mechanical suits someone who loves how watches work. On our range, only the quartz watches can be engraved on the back.

Choose quartz if…

  • He wants a watch that just works.
  • You'd like the message engraved on the back of the watch.
  • He might not wear it every day.

Choose mechanical if…

  • He's into watches and likes seeing how they work.
  • He'd like never to buy a battery.
  • He'll wear it most days. If it sits in a drawer it will stop, and you just set and wear it again.

Our mechanical watches are the Barcelona, Havana, Venice and Detroit. Because the back can't be engraved, we engrave the inside of the gift box for free instead.

Are wooden watches accurate?

The wood doesn't affect accuracy at all; the movement does. A quartz wooden watch is as accurate as any quartz watch. A mechanical one behaves like any mechanical watch.

Frequently asked questions

Are wooden watches accurate?

Yes. Accuracy depends on the movement, not the wood. Our quartz watches use Japanese Seiko and Miyota movements and keep very accurate time.

Do mechanical wooden watches need a battery?

No. Automatic mechanical watches are powered by the movement of your wrist. Wear it regularly to keep it running.

Can a mechanical wooden watch be engraved?

On our range, the back of the mechanical watches can't be engraved, so we engrave the inside of the gift box for free instead.

How often does a quartz watch need a new battery?

Every so often, depending on the movement. Any watch repairer can replace it.
