What to Engrave on a Watch: Ideas, Examples and Tips
Engraving
We engrave messages every day, and the best ones are usually the simplest.

Quick answer: The best watch engravings are short and personal: a date, initials, a name, a place, or a line only the two of you understand. For an anniversary, the wedding date works brilliantly. For a birthday, the age and year. Our engraving form takes up to 100 characters, and you'll see a free preview before we engrave anything.
Ideas that work
- A dateYour wedding day, the day you met, or the day he became a dad
- InitialsHis, or yours and his together
- A line from your vowsOr a song lyric that's yours
- A placeWhere you got married, where you met, or a favourite trip
- An in-jokeSomething that makes him smile and nobody else gets
- CoordinatesOf a place that matters to you both
By occasion
5th anniversary
Your wedding date, "Five years", or a line from your vows. Wood is the 5th anniversary material, so the watch says the rest. See our 5th anniversary gift guide.
Wedding morning
The date, plus "See you at the end of the aisle" or something just as simple.
Milestone birthday
The age and the year, or a short message from the family.
For dad
The children's names, or "From your favourite" (and let them argue about who that is).
How long can the message be?
Our engraving form takes up to 100 characters, but shorter usually looks better. Two or three short lines fit nicely on the back. If your message won't read clearly at that size, we'll get in touch and work it out with you rather than engrave something too small to read.
Before we engrave anything, you'll get a free preview so you can see exactly how it'll look. More in how our engraving works.
Where the engraving goes
On our quartz watches, we engrave the caseback, the flat back that sits against the wrist, so the message stays private. Our automatic mechanical watches have a back that can't be engraved, so we engrave the inside of the gift box for free instead.
A few tips
- Check dates and spellings twice. It's the most common thing people want to change.
- Use the format you'd naturally write: 14.06.2021 or 14th June 2021 both work.
- If you're keeping it a surprise, order in good time so you can check the preview without him seeing.
