How to Care for a Wooden Watch

A wooden watch isn't like any other timepiece. The natural grain, the warmth of the material, the way the light catches it differently every day. It's a watch that feels genuinely alive. And with a little straightforward care, it will stay that way for years.

This guide covers everything you need to know about looking after a wooden watch from The Wood Look, whether it's brand new or has been on your wrist for a while.

How to care for a wooden watch

How do I keep a wooden watch dry?

Wood and water are not friends. Our watches are treated and finished to handle everyday life, so a light splash or a bit of rain won't cause immediate damage. But prolonged exposure to moisture is worth avoiding.

  • Take your watch off before swimming, showering or washing up
  • If it does get wet, dry it gently with a soft cloth and leave it somewhere with good airflow
  • Avoid wearing it in steam rooms or saunas

How do I clean a wooden watch?

To clean the wooden case, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and wipe in the direction of the grain. Avoid harsh chemicals, alcohol-based cleaners or abrasive materials. These can strip the natural finish and dull the wood over time.

For the watch face and glass, a dry microfibre cloth works perfectly. No sprays needed.

Should I oil a wooden watch?

Yes, occasionally. Wood benefits from a little moisture every now and then. Not water, but a natural oil. A very small amount of coconut oil or beeswax applied with a soft cloth and buffed in will keep the grain looking rich and prevent the wood from drying out.

You don't need to do this often. Two or three times a year is plenty for most people.

Wooden watch care tips

Where should I store a wooden watch?

When you're not wearing it, keep your watch somewhere that avoids two extremes: direct sunlight and high humidity. Both can affect the wood over time. Sunlight can fade the grain and humidity can cause swelling or warping.

A watch box or soft pouch in a drawer is ideal. If you bought your watch from our shop, it came in a presentation box that doubles perfectly as everyday storage.

What about the strap?

Many of our watches feature a wooden or leather strap. For wooden straps, the same care rules apply as the case. For leather straps, a leather conditioner once in a while will keep them supple and prevent cracking.

Will the engraving last?

Yes. The personalised engraving on your watch is cut directly into the wood, not printed on top of it, so it doesn't fade or wear away over time. You can clean around it with a soft cloth, and a light application of oil will actually help the engraving stand out and look its best.

If you haven't yet added a personalised message to your watch, you can browse our full range here and add your engraving at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear my wooden watch in the rain?

Light rain is fine. Our watches are treated to handle everyday exposure, but we'd recommend drying them off afterwards and avoiding sustained soaking.

How often should I oil my wooden watch?

Two or three times a year is enough for most people. Use a natural oil like coconut oil, just a small amount on a soft cloth, buffed in gently.

Will the engraving wear off over time?

No. The engraving is cut into the wood, not printed on top of it, so it's permanent and doesn't fade with wear or cleaning.

Can I get the wooden case wet?

Brief contact with water isn't a problem, but we'd recommend removing your watch before swimming, showering or washing up to keep it in the best condition.

How do I clean the watch face?

A dry microfibre cloth is all you need. Avoid sprays or chemical cleaners near the face.

Where should I store my wooden watch?

Away from direct sunlight and high humidity. The presentation box it arrived in is perfect for everyday storage.
